Course Syllabus
This Privacy and Security Training course is required for all BSD faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. Although many BSD individuals do not have direct patient contact or actively use patient medical records or other applications that have patient information, they are exposed to incidental patient protected health information (PHI) or need information on how to assure all confidential data can be secured. Government regulations require that all individuals who have both direct and indirect access to PHI receive training to ensure understanding of our obligations under federal and state privacy laws.
This course involves the following required training modules:

During this course you will learn:
- About the Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability (“HIPAA”) Privacy, Security, Breach Notification and Enforcement Rules
- Who is part of the UCM Organized Health Care Arrangement (OHCA)
- How to recognize situations in which protected health information can be mishandled
- Practical ways to protect the privacy and security of protected health information
- Steps to take if protected health information is lost, stolen or misused
- General security threats to be aware of
- Consequences of a breach of protected health information
