BASC 80422 (WIN 18) Toni Morrison Song of Solomon and Jazz
This class will engage in reading and interpreting two powerful novels by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison, beginning with her groundbreaking 1977 novel Song of Solomon, an extraordinary exploration of identity that Morrison says freed her from traditional literary models and is remarkable for the complex lyrical style which emerges in its interweaving of many voices. From there we will move on to the 1992 novel Jazz, a novel set in 1920s Harlem using a structure where the character’s voices and stories emulate the structures of the jazz music at its heart.
